small Hackathon

I am making a call to all guys interested in working on a showcase project
involving GAE, GWT, Android, Chrome and FireFox Extensions.

The idea would be to meet at Cafe-Netzwerk and hack
a Fahrplan/Abfahrtmonitor client for Android, Chrome or FireFox browser,
using a common service layer on AppEngine.

I am personally not familiar with the Gadgets development, but if someone
wants to focus on it as a client, then we could include it too.

We have decided to have the first session already tomorrow 16th of June
in Café-Netzwerk and get the project rolling. I like to use Wave for collaborative
documenting, but since not everyone is using Wave I shall
post it on http://super-easy.blogspot.com

So let's get tomorrow at Café-Netzwerk (I will be there already around
1700 discussing/hacking with some friends). Great chance to get in
gear for the forthcoming DroidCon in Stuttgart on Friday.

regelmässiger Stammtisch

Lange Zeit ohne Blogpost, die Mailingliste ist eben mein bevorzugtes Kommunikationsmedium.

Auf dem letzten Treffen am 10 Juni (Google Go) habe ich ein neues Veranstaltungsformat kurz vorgestellt das durch die Bank weg gut ankam, den GData Stammtisch.

Immer am letzten Mittwoch im Monat ab 19 Uhr in der Niederlassung, Buttermelcherstrasse 6, in München - am schnellsten erreichbar vom Viktualienmarkt aus.

Größere Kartenansicht

Beim GData Stammtisch wollen wir uns, nicht in klassischer FrontalTechtalkmanie sondern von Angesicht zu Angesicht, jedes Mal über ein anderen Schwerpunkt unterhalten, also z.B. Android oder GWT oder eben die GData-APIs.

Natürlich ist das Gespräch nicht auf dieses Thema beschränkt, was wir möchten ist eben eine lockere Runde von und mit Entwicklern.

Das erste Treffen findet am 30ten Juni statt, kurzes Hallo in den Kommentaren wäre gut um abzuschätzen wie voll es wird.

Ein Abend mit HTML5 und Google Chrome Extensions

Dies ist ein Gastbeitrag von Michael Westrich, Mitglied der GTUG München:

Am vergangenen Montagabend trafen sich 30 Interessierte in der Google Kantine, um sich etwas

über HTML5 und Google Chrome Extensions anzuhören.

Nachdem Nils Hitze eine kurze Einführung gehalten und das Buffet eröffnet hatte, begann der aus Kalifornien angereiste Googler Arne Roomann-Kurrik mit seiner HTML5-Vorstellung. Er

präsetierte mit Hilfe einer mit HTML5 gemachten Präsentations-Google-Chrome-Extension, was mit HTML5 alles neues und altes schöner möglich ist.

Anschließend sprach Stephan Seidt über sein Projekt 9elements. Es wurde mit HTML5 und einer kleinen Serverimplementierung realisiert. Das Ergebnis ist eine beeindruckende Website mit herumfliegenden Kreisen, die zum Takt der Musik pulsieren. Klickt man auf einen Kreis, erscheint eine Twitternachricht zum Thema „html5“ und „love“.

Zum Abschluss stellte Arne Roomann-Kurrik anschaulich und übersichtlich dar, was Google Chrome Extensions sind. Er erläuterte auch an Beispielen, wie sie funktionieren und sich in den Browser integrieren lassen. Ebenfalls ging er auf die Programmierung und Veröffentlichung von Extensions ein.

Den rundum gelungenen Vortragsabend ließen eine gute Hand voll Zuhörer mit Arne Roomann-

Kurrik und Stephan Seidt in einer nahe gelegenen Kneipe bei Bier und Techtalk ausklingen.

Manche Funktion, für die man früher 20 Zeilen Javascriptcode brauchte, lässt sich mit HTML5 in 2 Zeilen realisieren. Ich sehe darin eine große Chance manches Kastendesign und -denken von

Websites und Browseranwendungen zu durchbrechen und neues hierbei zu ermöglichen. Doch

müssen erstmal alle Browserhersteller HTML5 unterstützen.

Chrome Extensions waren für mich nichts neues, da es schon zum Chrome Extensions Hackathon eine Einführung dazu gab. Durch die Präsentation von Arne Roomann-Kurrik wurden mir aber dennoch so manches über die Extensions klarer, besonders wie die verschiedenen Extensionarten arbeiten und welche Funktionsmöglichkeiten man durch die Extensions API hat.

Meiner Meinung nach ein super Abend an dem ich und bestimmt auch alle anderen Teilnehmer

neue Erkenntnisse und Erfahrungen sammeln und gute Kontakte knüpfen konnten.

Review GTUG Battle Hackathon

So, der Chrome Extension Hackathon ist vorbei, Zeit für ein Recap des Events.

Es war, zu mindestens nach meinem Empfinden, ein sehr entspanntes Event und ich bin Google für die Verpflegung und Evan und Jochen für ihre Vorträge sehr dankbar. Auch wenn ich selber leider nicht zum Hacken sondern nur zum Ideengeben gekommen bin, habe ich doch das große Potential erkennen können das in Chrome Extensions steckt. Vor allem das unglaublich unkomplizierte Handling, gepaart mit der Mächtigkeitvon HTML5/JavaScript, machen einfach Spass.

Generell kann ich sagen, ich hatte einfach mal nur Spass an dem Event. Vielleicht gerade weil mal tagsüber unterwegs waren und ich nicht erst spät Abends heimgekommen bin. (War ich dann ja wegen des Ignites trotzdem)

Ganz sicher ist: Der kreative Output solcher Hackathons ist um einiges größer als der traditioneller TechTalks, wobei solche natürlich auch ihre Berechtigungals Lernevents haben. Die Gespräche sind Problembezogener, Code entstehtund keiner guckt gelangweilt auf seinen Laptop.Ich bin jedenfalls sehr gespannt was die Teams im Rahmen des GTUG Battles an Extensions abliefern werden und freue mich auf die nächsten Events.

Germany GTUG Battle Beta 2010

What is the GTUG battle beta?

The GTUG battle beta will be a series of Google Chrome events including a Google Chrome extensions hackathon combined with a competition for the best developed Google Chrome extension.

Why should your GTUG join the battle?
Because its worth it!

Participating teams must be min 2 and max 5 people. Each team must belong to one existing German GTUG. The winning GTUG group as well as the winning team will receive terrific prizes.

On top of that, maybe you will build a great extension that everyone in the whole wide world will be able to use!

Competition closes 14th March

Dates for the following events are confirmed:

• Hamburg - Tuesday, February 23, at the Google Office, ABC-Str. 19, Hamburg
• Dusseldorf - Thursday, February 25, at the Google Office - tbc
• Munich - Monday, March 1, 3pm to 8:30pm, at the Google Office, Dienerstrasse 12

• Karlsruhe & Stuttgart (Neckar/Alb) (possibly joined)

If possible Google will support you with Google speakers at the event. They will hold a Google Chrome introduction and lead the hackathon so that you get all your questions answered.

If we can't send somebody over, we will email you tutorials and other information.

You don't have to be Member of a GTUG, if you're not registered right now, search for your nearest GTUG and sign up. There will be prices for the winning team but also for the winning GTUG.

Wave Hackathon Recap

So we had our first Wave Hackathon at the CDTM here in Munich last weekend.

CDTM is an Institute which is part of the TUM, the Technic University Munich.

We had around 28 people registered, 5 cancellations and 23 showing up on site,

so basically we had a zero percent of NoShow, which is really a good rate.

But ok, let's get this review started:

We started at 10:30 am with a brief free hand introduction of Wave, Embed API, Robots

and Gadgets. It was free hand because i totally had lost track of time the last weeks

due to my Job Termination. But i think i did quite a good job anyway and some of the

more expirienced Developers in the audience helped me out.

Then we went on to the Brainstorming, where everyone told the crowd about their idea

for a Gadget or a Robot and then after that, they teamed up to Groups so we could start

the Hacking. This was the time when i left with some friends to get some supplies.

When we returned with our approx. 20 Liters of Coke and several Packages of Chips & Gummi Bears

the Rest of the Crowd was allready hacking hard at their choosen Projects.

I left at 4 pm to get back to my family but as i heard, some of the guys hacked until 9pm.

The next day we only had seven Developers, which made Pizzaordering a bit easier, but we created a Pricecalculator for it anyway. So we nerded our way trough some Bugfixing and Programming and then everyone presented their projects.

So it's over now and next we will have an Android Hackathon and a more general Hackathon on a regular Basis.
